PACS and RIS

What we do

The National Information Systems Group (NISG) of National Services Scotland (NSS) leads in the management of the national Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) programme.

What PACs is

The technology allows images such as x-rays and scans to be stored electronically and viewed on video screens. This means doctors and other health professionals can access the information and compare it with previous images at the touch of a button.

PACS integrates with, and is driven by, the RIS (Radiology Information System) which is a National Archive of electronic images and radiological reports, shared across NHSScotland.

The benefits

  • Clinicians can access images instantly, regardless of where they are, so they can make clinical decisions more quickly.
  • PACS brings real benefit to patients, improving the accuracy of diagnoses and reducing the need for repeat investigations.
  • RIS improves radiology workflow by automating the patients’ diagnostic journey, reducing errors and improving care.
